The Nature Center has set aside ten acres of Rio Grande river bottoms for the White
collared seedeater. This area is designated as Site # Two on the Texas Wildlife
Trails Map—Rio Bravo Loop. Public access to bird watch along the Rio Grande is through
the Main Street gate of the Border Fence that gives entry to Shelby Park. Go to
the river then take the dirt road north to the rivercane breaks. Osprey, American
pelican, Green jay, Grooved-bill ani, and Great Kiskadee are common.
The Nature Center has prepared a Birding Map of Maverick County with a birding list
and a dozen locations open to the public around the county. This is available at
many of the motels and at the Chamber of Commerce.
October is Monarch Month in Maverick County—the “neck” of the funnel for the Monarch
Butterfly Central Flyway, which begins in Central Canada and the Great Lakes Region.
The Fall of 2009, the Nature Center will feature a city map with known roosting
sites accessible to the public for a driving tour. The migration usually arrives
around October 12 and persists until the first week in November.
