Stop in Fort Stockton for an unforgettable experience. This unique West Texas city began as a military post established in 1859 near Comanche Springs. Today, the city seamlessly blends its past with its present. The Historic Fort Stockton Tour, marked by white and blue signs with black arrows, guides visitors to sixteen points of interest through the old town. The tour begins at the statue of Paisano Pete at the intersection of Dickinson (I-10 Business) and Main Street. Pete is the world’s largest roadrunner standing 11 feet tall and 22 feet long!

Along the two mile tour see the 1912 Pecos County courthouse, the original 1883 county jail, and the Grey Mule Saloon. The oldest house, known to have existed in 1859, and the oldest remaining school in the area are also stops on the tour. There is even a house on 5th Street that was purchased from the Montgomery Ward’s catalog in the late 1920’s. The tour ends at the Old Fort Cemetery, in use from 1875-1912.

Historic Fort Stockton still stands on the east side of town. Today, the Fort consists of both original and reconstructed buildings, including Officers’ Row, the Guardhouse, men’s barracks, and the Parade Grounds. Inside the Fort Stockton Museum and Visitor’s Center, life at the Fort is depicted through a variety of interpretive exhibits.

The Annie Riggs Memorial Museum is another place you do not want to miss while in Fort Stockton. Open six days a week, the museum provides an in depth look at Pecos County’s past. The thirteen rooms and courtyard depict Fort Stockton’s heritage and development in the late 1800’s. The former hotel and boarding house is filled with fascinating photographs, collectables, historical documents, and furnishings. Explore the guest rooms, parlors, and thriving desert garden, but no spitting on the floor!

After your tour, be sure to visit the other attractions in and around this West Texas city. Enjoy an afternoon of bowling, arcade, movies, and miniature golf at the Stockton Plaza Entertainment Complex. Have a delicious meal at a local restaurant or taste the wine from Ste. Genevieve winery. At the end of the day, rest and rejuvenate at one of Fort Stockton’s comfortable modern motels or R.V. parks.
