Visit Del Rio and experience “The Best of the Border”! Del Rio offers visitors a
unique chance to experience a fascinating combination of cultures. This
Two-Nation Destination sits across the border from Ciudad Acuña, Mexico. Del Rio
was originally known as San Felipe del Rio by the Spanish missionaries who
arrived on Saint Phillips’ day in 1635. In 1883, the Post Office Department
requested that the name be shortened to Del Rio to avoid confusion with the town
of San Felipe de Austin, just a few hours away.

Explore historic Downtown Del Rio or visit the Whitehead Memorial Museum to
discover the past, alive in the present. Shop and dine in the city’s unique
shops, restaurants, museums and art galleries. Stop by the oldest bonded winery
in Texas, Val Verde Winery, and enjoy a tour and wine tasting. Savor the native
cuisine at one of the city’s locally owned restaurants and catch a show by the
local award-winning theater group, The Upstagers.

Nature lovers will enjoy Lake Amistad, the third largest international man-made
lake in the world. Amistad offers primitive camping, hiking trails, bird
watching, and hunting in one of the park’s five designated areas. If your idea
of fun is skiing, boating or fishing, in one of the best bass lakes in America,
then Amistad is the place for you. The lake is managed by the National Park
Service and is part of the Amistad National Recreation Area. The lake and
recreation area were named after the Spanish word for friendship and link Del
Rio with our friends south of the border. Two bronze eagles sit at the center of
the International Dam to symbolize the strong ties between the U.S. and Mexico.
Nearby is Seminole Canyon State Park and Historic Site, home to world renowned
rock art that dates over 4,000 years old.
